2026 Degree Deadlines
Bachelor
Bachelor programmes last 4 years and the official 2026 intake started in early September 2026. Chinese Government Scholarship Type A applicants were directed to consult the Chinese Embassy/Consulate in their home country. ECNU listed 2026-04-30 for Shanghai Government Scholarship and ECNU Excellent Freshmen Scholarship, 2026-05-15 for International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship, and 2026-06-01 for self-funded applicants. These dates had passed by 2026-10-09.
Degree Eligibility
Bachelor eligibility
Bachelor applicants need a high-school qualification or above and a valid foreign passport. Former Mainland China, Hong Kong, Macao or Taiwan residents who have acquired foreign nationality, and applicants born with foreign nationality while one or both parents are Chinese nationals settled abroad, must meet China MOE Document No. 12 (2020). Applicants for the English major, School of International Chinese Studies programmes, or Chinese-taught School of Design programmes need HSK 4 with 180 or above; other Chinese-taught programmes need HSK 5 with 180 or above; School of Communication programmes need HSK 6 with 180 or above. Non-native English speakers for English-taught programmes need IELTS 6.0, TOEFL 85, or Cambridge English B2 or above. The 2026 bachelor guide also required CSCA results; ECNU stated no minimum CSCA score threshold and used it as a reference for academic review and comprehensive evaluation. Applicants under 18 need a guardian in China.
Degree Application Documents
Bachelor documents
Bachelor applicants complete the ECNU International Students Application Form online and pay the RMB 800 application fee. Uploaded materials include high-school graduation certificate or expected graduation certificate, complete high-school transcript, language certificate, CSCA result, a 500-800 word self-recommendation letter, passport information page and Chinese visa pages if applicable, guardian guarantee for applicants under 18, and other materials required by the system. Documents not in Chinese or English need notarized Chinese or English translations. The self-recommendation letter should match the programme language.
Degree Programmes, Campuses and Fees
Bachelor catalogue
The official 2026 bachelor catalogue covers programmes for international applicants. All listed bachelor programmes last 4 years and are on Putuo or Minhang campus. Recorded annual tuition values include RMB 22,000, 24,000, 28,000, 50,000, 54,000, and selected RMB 108,000 programmes. Some entries list CSCA subjects. Examples include International Business (Chinese-English), Putuo, 4 years, RMB 22,000/year; and Computer Science and Technology, Putuo, 4 years, RMB 24,000/year.
Which costs remain after funding?
Start with your programme’s actual tuition and charging period, then deduct only confirmed funding. SGS B does not list housing or living allowances; the freshman award lists only a first-year stipend, so do not deduct tuition, accommodation or insurance on that basis. Budget separately for the non-refundable RMB 800 fee for 2026 bachelor/master applications. Check airfare, visa, residence-permit, medical-examination, off-campus housing and other unconfirmed costs individually. Unknown costs are not zero, and these items are not a complete total budget.
Insurance requirements and separate premiums
ECNU requires approved comprehensive insurance covering the study period. For study longer than six months, an existing policy must be issued by a mainland Chinese insurer and meet ECNU’s coverage requirements. If it does not, or no policy is held, the school lists Guo Ren insurance at RMB 400 for six months or RMB 800 per year. If an award includes insurance, confirm its arrangements before counting another premium. This is the current general insurance guidance, not a newly announced 2027 rate.
Scholarships and Accommodation
Scholarship types
ECNU scholarship pages group options by undergraduate, graduate and non-degree categories, including Chinese Government Scholarship, Shanghai Government Scholarship, International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship and ECNU scholarships. Graduate listings also include CSC A-Youth of Excellence Scheme of China and China Studies Programs. Some full scholarships describe tuition waiver, on-campus accommodation waiver, comprehensive insurance and monthly stipend. Coverage, application platform and deadlines vary by scholarship type.
Can I study without a scholarship?
ECNU’s currently downloadable Shanghai Government Scholarship (SGS) form asks whether you would consider self-funded study if no scholarship is awarded. Your answer records an intention; it does not grant admission or guarantee conversion. The 2026 admissions instructions separate pre-admission, scholarship assessment and formal admission. An unsuccessful funding decision alone establishes neither rejection of the degree application nor automatic conversion to self-funded study. Ask Admissions to confirm your admission status, whether an application change or new application is required, any additional application fee, and the acceptance and payment deadlines. The downloadable form does not specify an intake year and does not replace the annual admissions and scholarship instructions.
Can I seek SGS and the undergraduate freshman award?
You cannot receive both awards concurrently. As checked on 2026-10-12, current undergraduate pages do not explain whether one application enters both assessments. A restriction on receiving both awards does not establish a restriction on requesting consideration, nor does it prove automatic assessment for both. Check programme eligibility and ask ECNU how to request consideration. Its 2026 undergraduate SGS instructions specify university nomination without a separate scholarship application. SGS A/B are full/partial funding categories, distinct from CSC A/B application channels. Corresponding 2027 undergraduate rules have not yet been found; use the next intake’s published instructions.
2026 freshman award: funding and eligibility
The 2026 Excellent Freshmen Scholarship lists a living stipend of RMB 2,500 per month for 12 months of the first academic year. Do not budget it as a tuition waiver, housing waiver or four-year full scholarship. It requires HSK5 with at least 180 and excludes joint and English-taught programmes. The 2026 undergraduate SGS additionally excludes School of International Chinese Studies programmes. Check programme admission language requirements separately from scholarship requirements. These are 2026 undergraduate terms, not confirmed master’s or 2027 conditions. The April 30 deadlines listed for both 2026 undergraduate awards have passed.
Confirm your individual application with ECNU
Use the International Students Office contact listed on the official undergraduate scholarship page: lxs@ecnu.edu.cn; +86-21-62232013. Provide your intake year, exact programme and teaching language, application reference and current system status. Ask about consideration for both awards and self-funded eligibility, procedures, fees and deadlines after an unsuccessful funding decision. Do not arrange payment solely on the basis of pre-admission or the form’s self-funded preference.
On-campus housing
On-campus dormitory reservations are made online. ECNU states that only formally admitted students who have completed tuition payment before the system opens, including tuition-waived scholarship and exchange students, are eligible, subject to availability. Opening dates and procedures are usually emailed in early January and July, all Beijing Time. Rooms are first-come, first-served. Self-paying students must complete online payment within the required period after confirmation, or the order is cancelled automatically. Students who cannot secure on-campus housing arrange off-campus housing themselves. The general accommodation page does not publish one universal room-rate table; the Chinese Language Summer Program page separately lists short-term summer rates.
2026 undergraduate/master SGS A coverage
For 2026, SGS A covers tuition, on-campus accommodation and comprehensive medical insurance valued at RMB 800 per person per year. The monthly stipend is RMB 2,500 for undergraduates and RMB 3,000 for master’s students. SGS A is a full-funding category, distinct from the CSC Type A application channel. Do not substitute an assumed off-campus rent allowance. Airfare, visa, residence-permit, medical-examination and other costs are not confirmed in these coverage lists.
2026 undergraduate/master SGS B and remaining costs
For 2026, SGS B covers tuition and comprehensive medical insurance valued at RMB 800 per person per year. Its coverage list does not include accommodation or a living stipend, so budget separately for housing and daily living. Confirm actual costs rather than applying SGS A benefits. Application fees and other unconfirmed expenses are separate. SGS B is a partial-funding category, distinct from the CSC Type B application channel.
Does SGS renew automatically each year?
Shanghai’s 2026 SGS guidance requires an annual review of academic performance, study attitude, attendance, conduct and rewards or disciplinary action. Passing retains eligibility for the next academic year; failure may suspend or cancel funding. A first-year award is not unconditional funding for the entire degree. The undergraduate freshman award’s first-year 12-month stipend is a separate award and does not inherit SGS renewal rules.
Formal Application Flow
Online application
Formal applications are completed in ECNU's International Students online application system. Applicants register an account, complete the form, upload documents and pay the required application fee. Degree and non-degree academic study pages state that applications without fee payment are invalid. Check the instructions for the specific degree, intake and scholarship to determine whether another scholarship system is required. The 2026 undergraduate SGS route uses university nomination without a separate scholarship application.
Review and admission
ECNU first conducts preliminary eligibility review. Qualified applications are evaluated by the relevant school or department, with interviews arranged when needed, and final decisions are based on comprehensive evaluation. Admitted students download electronic Admission Notice and JW201/JW202 forms from the designated website; ECNU no longer issues paper copies. Students bring original graduation and degree documents for verification at registration; failure to provide required documents affects enrolment. The 2026 degree instructions separate pre-admission, scholarship assessment and formal admission. Scholarship applicants must still await the funding result after pre-admission; pre-admission does not establish an award or automatic conversion to self-funded study.
Preparing a student visa after formal admission
After formal admission, prepare an ordinary passport, the Admission Notice and the school-issued study form according to the Chinese embassy or consulate handling your application. Study exceeding 180 days normally uses an X1 visa; confirm your actual visa category. X1 holders must apply for a study residence permit within 30 days of entry. Ask ECNU’s International Students Office about medical checks, accommodation registration, the school’s application letter and processing arrangements. Pre-admission or pending funding does not establish that visa documents are ready.
Accommodation registration after arrival
For on-campus accommodation, confirm registration with the dormitory reception and obtain the registration record. When staying outside hotels, complete accommodation registration within 24 hours of check-in. Shanghai’s current guidance offers NIA online registration through the NIA 12367 WeChat or Alipay mini programme or app; the host should assist with initial registration. Accommodation registration and a study residence permit are separate steps. Keep the registration record for subsequent procedures.
